The story of a material girl

I’ve met her only once, at my friend’s place. She was the girlfriend of my friend’s friend. And she did impress me. Perhaps all material girls are beautiful. I was almost envious of her: cute, gorgeous, stylish and attractive.  Her pretty face and perfect English had made her a news reporter at the local TV station. Compared to her brilliant appearance, her boyfriend seemed to be too ordinary.

Yesterday I mentioned her to my friend. She was surprised so much because she thought they broke up a year ago. “There is no way they could be together” she said, “She’s a whore.” I was very shocked by the mean word she chose to describe that girl. “Why?!” I asked with wonder.

My friend began to tell their stories. She said the girl was not rich, but she really liked to live in luxury. The guy spent a lot of money to buy her expensive gifts. They had been introduced to their family formally as fiancées. Then she moved to another state to study. Not long after that, she began secretly dating with a professor in her university. She thought her boyfriend wouldn’t know it. But it’s a small world after all. Some one saw her and the professor on the street and told her boyfriend about it. And what’s worse, she sent her father an email, asking for his opinion. In that email she said her boyfriend was poor, ugly and short, while the professor was rich and handsome.  Unfortunately her boyfriend knew the password of her email and happened to read that email. So they broke up. He told them that she gave his gifts to the professor.  The girl had called many times. He refused to answer her calls in front of his friends. That was not the first time they said goodbye. But no one knows what happened between them after that and how did they get together again.

The guy is very nice so his friends do not want him be hurt or cheated. They all dislike that girl. My friend said even she left the professor this time, she will and she can find another rich man. I barely know the girl but from the story somehow I feel perhaps she was still in love with that guy. Or why did she bother to go back to him? It’s hard to say how long their relationship will last in the future. But I am curious: for such a material girl, what will win out? Money or love?
